Vivienne Westwood. British Couture with a Rebellious Heart.
Vivienne Westwood opened her first boutique at 430 Kings Road in London in 1971, and from that moment redefined what fashion could stand for. Over the following decades, the label became synonymous with British craftsmanship, radical thinking, and a deep love of art history. Dame Vivienne Westwood, born in Derbyshire in 1941 and appointed Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 2006, spent more than fifty years creating clothes that challenged convention while demanding the highest standard of tailoring. The brand continues today under the creative direction of her husband, Andreas Kronthaler.
Bridal design is woven into the very fabric of the Vivienne Westwood story. The first bridal silhouette appeared on a runway in 1991, when a model closed the spring-summer show in a gown printed with an eighteenth-century Fragonard painting. The Couture bridal atelier was established in the mid-1990s and has since grown into one of the most distinctive bridal propositions in the world, rooted in art, history, and a quiet refusal to follow the ordinary path. In April 2025, the house held its first dedicated bridal runway show at Barcelona Bridal Fashion Week. Every gown is handcrafted in England, and each design draws from art history, Tudor court dress, and classical sculpture.
